Kim Donehower grew up in Mills River and Asheville, North Carolina.
Her research on rural literacy began in her mother's Appalachian hometown,
which had seen three waves of literacy interventions by outsiders.
Since then, Kim has continued to investigate issues of rural literacy in southern Appalachia and the northern Great Plains. She is Professor of English
at the University of North Dakota, where her work focuses on literacy's impact
on the sustainability of rural communities and schools.
